1. Why Delivery Inspection Matters

Steel frame formwork earns its place on a project through repeat performance. Every defect that arrives on site is carried into every pour it touches — a bowed frame prints its shape into the concrete face, a loose facing shifts under vibration, a missing tie stalls the first assembly.

A structured check on delivery catches these before they become site problems. The inspection protects three things at once: the concrete finish quality, the panel's reuse life, and the assembly schedule of the first pour.

2. What Arrives On Site

A steel frame formwork panel is three systems in one: the welded frame that carries the load, the plywood facing that shapes the concrete, and the hardware that joins panels together. Each needs its own check.

Bow is checked by eye along the panel length with a straightedge reference. Panels that arrive bowed will not sit flush against neighbouring panels, leaving a step in the concrete face that grinding cannot fully remove.

4. Weld Quality At The Frame Joints

The frame corners and stiffener intersections carry the concrete head pressure during the pour. Examine each weld for full coverage, no cracks, and no porosity. Small grinding marks are normal from the production line; cracks are not.

A cracked weld on delivery will not improve with use — it will propagate. Flag any cracked corner weld for repair before the panel is accepted into the fleet.

5. Facing Bond And Surface Condition

The plywood facing is the replaceable wear layer, but its condition on arrival determines how many pours the panel delivers before replacement. Verify three things:

  • The phenolic film is intact — no deep scratches that reach the wood
  • No delamination at panel edges or corners, where facing damage begins
  • Screw heads are seated flush, not proud — proud screws catch the concrete and damage the release surface

6. Tie Hole Alignment And Hardware Completeness

Tie holes are the interface between panels and the tie system that holds them together under pour pressure. Check that hole spacing is consistent across panels from the same batch — mismatched spacing between panels means rework during assembly.

Count the hardware kit against the panel quantity: ties, wedges, and pins should be complete and undamaged. A missing wedge may seem trivial until the first wall pour tightens.

7. Edge Sealing And Storage Before First Pour

Even new panels arrive with exposed plywood edges, and the factory edge seal should be verified on each panel face. Unsealed or damaged edge seal is the fastest path to edge swelling.

Before the first pour, store panels upright on their frames, off the ground, under cover, and with air circulation between panels. Schedule edge re-sealing after every few uses as a standing rule.

  • Inspecting from the delivery photo instead of the panel itself
  • Checking one panel and assuming the batch is identical
  • Treating weld cracks as cosmetic — they propagate under load
